Tell Me Your Sign and I'll Tell You How You Talk to Your Dead 🕯️

How You Talk to Your Dead, Based on Your Sign 🕯️

A candle on the windowsill, a voicemail you just can't bring yourself to delete, Grandma's recipe made for the tenth time… We all have our own way of talking to our dead. Some write to them, some fill them in on their day while driving, and some never say a word but never forget early November either. And I'll let you in on a secret: your zodiac sign says a lot about yours.

So let me take you on a gentle little journey, not a sad one at all: the 12 zodiac signs, in order, each with its own way of keeping the bond with those who are gone. Find yours… then your mom's, your brother's or your best friend's. You'll smile, I promise.

✦

Why Do We Feel Like Talking to Our Dead in Early November? 🍂

It's no coincidence the urge comes back every fall. November 1 is All Saints' Day, and the next day, November 2, is All Souls' Day, a day for the dead that Odilo, abbot of Cluny, established around the year 1000. For more than a thousand years, these two days have been a standing date: flowers on graves, a light in the window, names spoken that hadn't been said in a long time.

In Mexico, and in many families across the US, the Día de los Muertos does the same thing in full color: on November 1 and 2, families set up an altar with candles, photos and their loved ones' favorite dishes, a celebration UNESCO added to its intangible cultural heritage list in 2008. There, you don't whisper to the dead: you invite them to dinner. 💛

And astrology? During those days, the Sun travels through Scorpio, the sign tradition links to the 8th house: death, transformation, inheritance. The sky itself puts the subject on the table. Each sign answers with its element, its planet and its temperament.

How Each Zodiac Sign Talks to Its Dead 🕯️

♈ Aries

Planet: Mars — Element: Fire
March 21 – April 19
Aries — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I talk to you on the run, and I mean it”

Aries, you don't sit for hours in front of a photo: your throat tightens and you need to move. Ruled by Mars, a Fire sign that tradition links to the 1st house (drive, action), you talk to your dead… by doing. You run a race for the charity he supported, you finish the bookshelf she started, and as you cross the finish line you blurt out, “That one's for you!” 🔥

Your conversations are short, out loud, often in the car (yes, in between honks). That doesn't make them any less real. Give yourself five still minutes on November 2, a candle and nothing else: your heart deserves a seat too.

♉ Taurus

Planet: Venus — Element: Earth
April 20 – May 20
Taurus — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I'm keeping your sweater, and your recipe”

For you, Taurus, the bond runs through the senses. An Earth sign ruled by Venus, linked by tradition to the 2nd house (possessions, what you can touch), you talk to your dead through objects: the sweater you still wear, the watch you keep wound, the rosebush in the yard. And above all, the kitchen: you make her pot roast down to the last pinch of salt, and with the first bite, she's right there. 🌹

You're not one for big speeches about the afterlife. You're loyal, plain and simple, and your loyalty smells like cinnamon. Cook their favorite dish this week and invite the people who knew them: for you, a shared meal says more than a long speech (and there'll be seconds).

♊ Gemini

Planet: Mercury — Element: Air
May 21 – June 20
Gemini — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I still have so much to tell you”

Gemini, you talk to them… a lot. An Air sign ruled by Mercury, messenger of the gods, and linked by tradition to the 3rd house (speech, writing, siblings), you keep the bond alive with words: you replay their voicemail, you type texts that will never be sent, you tell their stories to anyone who'll listen (and to those who won't). 💬

With you, someone who passed is never truly silent: they live on in your stories, with their own favorite expressions. Write them a real letter, by hand, with all the family news. You'll see: the words that come out on paper aren't the ones from your phone.

♋ Cancer

Planet: Moon — Element: Water
June 21 – July 22
Cancer — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“You're part of this home, forever”

If anyone is the keeper of memories, it's you, Cancer. Your planet, the Moon, rules memories and home, and tradition ties you to the 4th house: roots, family, lineage. You talk to your dead at home, surrounded by photo albums, in front of the little memory corner on the sideboard, or telling the kids “what your great-grandma was like.” 🦀

They often visit you in dreams, and you wake up with a full heart: that's your way of talking (what does it mean when you dream of dead people?). Open the album with someone instead of flipping through it alone: a shared memory weighs less.

♌ Leo

Planet: Sun — Element: Fire
July 23 – August 22
Leo — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“Tonight, we raise a glass to you”

Leo, you refuse to let memories turn gray. Ruled by the Sun and linked by tradition to the 5th house (joy, celebration, the heart), you talk to your dead by celebrating them: you throw them a birthday every year, you raise a glass while telling their greatest stories (slightly embellished, admit it), you blast their song in the living room. ☀️

Deep down, you're very close to the spirit of the Día de los Muertos: you remember them laughing, and you set a plate for the one who's missing. Your grief is real, it just comes with a little glitter. Host a dinner in their honor, with their favorite dessert: they would have loved being the star of the night (sound like anyone you know?).

♍ Virgo

Planet: Mercury — Element: Earth
August 23 – September 22
Virgo — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I'm taking care of everything, the way you'd want”

Virgo, you don't make big speeches: you take care. An Earth sign ruled by Mercury, linked by tradition to the 6th house (daily life, service, care), you talk to your dead with your hands. A spotless headstone, flowers chosen petal by petal, their paperwork in order, their garden trimmed: every gesture is a sentence. 🌿

And you keep looking after the ones they loved: their dog, their neighbor, your little nephew. It's your way of saying “I've got this, rest now.” Leave one small imperfection in the bouquet: love doesn't need to be perfectly lined up (yes, really, I promise).

♎ Libra

Planet: Venus — Element: Air
September 23 – October 22
Libra — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“So, what would you have thought?”

Libra, you live as a pair, even with those who are gone. Ruled by Venus, an Air sign linked by tradition to the 7th house (the other, dialogue, harmony), you talk to your dead as a conversation: facing a decision, you wonder what she would have told you, and often, you hear the answer. ⚖️

Your soft spot is the words left hanging: the argument never settled, the thank-you never said. You need harmony, even with the other side. Say out loud what was left unsaid, in front of a flower or a photo: the peace you're looking for starts with that sentence. (And yes, you're allowed to take forever choosing the bouquet.)

♏ Scorpio

Planet: Pluto — Element: Water
October 23 – November 21
Scorpio — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“Death doesn't scare me, but missing you does”

Ah, Scorpio… Your season lands right on the Day of the Dead. Ruled by Pluto, Roman god of the underworld (and by Mars in traditional astrology), a Water sign linked to the 8th house, the house of death and inheritance, you're the sign most at ease with the afterlife. You talk about it without taboos and ask the questions everyone else avoids. 🦂

You don't let go of the bond: you watch for signs, you want to understand, and when nothing comes, it eats at you (why am I not getting signs from my loved one who passed?). Share what you feel with someone who's still here: your depth is a treasure, but you don't have to carry it all alone.

♐ Sagittarius

Planet: Jupiter — Element: Fire
November 22 – December 21
Sagittarius — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I know you're out there somewhere, traveling”

Sagittarius, you talk to your dead through your faith, whatever it may be. Ruled by Jupiter, a Fire sign linked by tradition to the 9th house (belief, meaning, long journeys), you're convinced they're not “over,” just somewhere else, gone on ahead. And you tell them so with disarming optimism. 🏹

Your ritual is the open road: you go back to their hometown, you take the trip they always dreamed of, you write them a postcard. Bring one of their things on your next trip and describe the view to them: for you, the bond renews itself with every horizon (and your bag is already packed, I know).

♑ Capricorn

Planet: Saturn — Element: Earth
December 22 – January 19
Capricorn — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I come every year, it's our date”

Capricorn, you're the keeper of tradition. Ruled by Saturn, which tradition makes the lord of time and of the elders, an Earth sign linked to the 10th house (legacy, what you build to last), you never miss the date: flowers on the grave, a tidy headstone, a moment of silence. You don't say much, but you show up. ⛰️

Your real conversation is legacy: you carry on their values, you keep the family house, you pass on the way they did things. Private by nature, you hold back tears in front of others. Let yourself cry this year: even the strongest mountain lets its streams run, and that's what keeps it alive.

♒ Aquarius

Planet: Uranus — Element: Air
January 20 – February 18
Aquarius — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I'm sending you a playlist among the stars”

Aquarius, you don't do anything like everyone else, not even grief. Ruled by Uranus (and by Saturn in traditional astrology), an Air sign linked to the 11th house (friends, community, the future), you talk to your dead in an original way: a playlist in their name, a message to the stars from the balcony, a night of memories with the whole crew. 🌌

You can seem detached; in reality, you turn grief into a project: a fundraiser for their favorite cause, a mission they cared about, a tree planted for them. Share a memory with the group on November 2: with you, the bond is woven together (long live the group chat “For Grandma”).

♓ Pisces

Planet: Neptune — Element: Water
February 19 – March 20
Pisces — how this sign talks to loved ones who passed

“I can feel you here, so close”

Pisces, you don't need words: you feel. Ruled by Neptune (and by Jupiter in traditional astrology), a Water sign linked to the 12th house, the house of the unseen and of dreams, you're the zodiac's most open door to their presence: a white feather on your path, a butterfly that lingers (in Mexico, the monarch is seen as a messenger of souls), their song on the radio at just the right moment. 🪶

You talk to them in dreams, in prayer, in music, sometimes with no words at all. Your sensitivity is a gift, as long as you keep one foot on the ground. Ground yourself after every quiet moment of remembrance: a glass of water, a walk, a hug. The other side can wait until you've had dinner.

✦

How Do You Talk to a Loved One Who Passed When You Don't Know Where to Start? 🤍

Your Sun sign sets the tone, but it doesn't tell the whole story. In astrology, the Moon in your chart speaks to your emotions and memory, and your rising sign to the way you act: a Capricorn with a Pisces Moon may well bring flowers every year… and sense a presence on the way home. If you only half recognize yourself, read those two signs as well (the tool at the top of the page calculates them for you).

And if you're not sure how to begin, start small: a candle, their photo and one sentence spoken out loud. There's no right way to talk to the dead, and no deadline either. If nothing seems to answer, it's not a lack of love: signs sometimes take their time.

And if the grief gets too heavy, talk about it with someone close or with a person who supports the grieving: letting yourself be helped is part of the bond too.

✦ ✦

Talking to Your Dead, Each Sign in Its Own Way 🌙

Candle, recipe, playlist or a visit to the cemetery: no way of talking to the dead is more right than another. Your zodiac sign sheds light on your natural tendency, it doesn't lock you into it. Nothing stops you from borrowing another sign's ritual this year: writing like a Gemini, raising a glass like a Leo, or simply sitting still, the way Aries is learning to. You're the one who chooses how to keep the bond.

And if this page made you think of someone, send it to the person you light the candle with every year, or to that cousin who brings flowers in silence. Maybe, for once, you'll talk about the one you both miss. 🕯️
