The word “totem” comes from the Ojibwe (an Algonquian language of the Great Lakes region) ototeman, which originally refers to the clan or kinship group: literally “he is my relative”. It entered English as early as 1791 through the trader John Long. The idea of a personal “spirit animal” then spread in the West, where it took on the meaning it has today.
