Michael is the archangel you call on when you are afraid. Not the gentle one, not the one of dreams: the one who steps in front. Tradition made him commander of the heavenly host, the one who struck down the dragon, the weigher of souls — and the best known of the nine ruling archangels.
If you were born between 1 January and 9 February, Michael is the archangel who watches over your guardian angel.
Michael rules the choir of the Archangels, the eighth of the nine choirs of the Kabbalah, placed under the Sephirah Hod. His Hebrew name is a question — “Who is like God” — and the expected answer is: no one. Tradition says it is the cry he raises as he faces the one who claimed to be.

Michael’s founding story is a battle, and Revelation tells it in one dry sentence: “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,” (Revelation 12:7, King James Version). The dragon is the angel who wanted God’s place. Michael casts him out of heaven, and has answered pride ever since.
The book of Daniel names him long before Revelation, where he rises as the great prince who stands for his people (Daniel 12:1). The defender of a people, not of one person — that is what separates an archangel from a guardian angel.
France has a particular bond with him: he is the patron saint of Normandy, which is why Mont-Saint-Michel bears his name, and tradition credits him with the apparition that sent Joan of Arc to free the kingdom.

A great deal is ascribed to him, because he is the most invoked of all. In tradition, his domains come down to four.

Close protection
By far the most common reason people call him: fear. Fear of a place, a person, a journey, a night. He is the patron of police officers and of everyone whose job is to stand in front.

Discernment
Michael does not comfort, he clarifies. When a situation is muddled, his role is to make visible what had been mixed together, so the decision becomes obvious.

Settling conflict
A conflict that drags on damages you as much as the other person. Tradition credits Michael with untangling those situations — not by taking sides, by letting the tension drop.

Michael commands the guardian angels and sends them out. Praying to him often means asking that yours make itself clearer: a sign, a feather, an hour that keeps coming back.

Michael is recognised by two objects, and each says one of his functions. The sword cuts: it separates what has to be separated, it ends things. It is the weapon of the fight against the dragon, and it is also what people ask him for when a situation has turned sour.
The scales weigh: tradition puts him in charge of weighing souls at the Last Judgment. That is why he is not only a protector — you do not ask him to look away, you ask him to see clearly. Many pray to him after a wrong, rather than before.
