Millennia of Origins: Between Astronomy and Imperial Power

The history of Chinese astrology is intrinsically linked to that of ancient China. According to tradition, the first astrological calendar dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE (around 2637 BCE), established by the mythical Yellow Emperor, Huang Di. At this time, this discipline was not intended for individuals but for the State: it served to predict political events and validate the Emperor's authority.

For centuries, emperors prohibited the populace from practicing celestial observation, fearing that rivals might use the stars to pinpoint periods of dynastic weakness and attempt an overthrow.

The Emergence of Parallel Systems

With celestial observation thus prohibited, parallel systems began to develop. These are sometimes closer to numerology than to Western astrology as we know it, as they are based on calendar cycles rather than the direct positions of visible planets in the sky.

Thus, the history of Chinese astrology diversified into several schools:

• The "28 Lunar Mansions" system: One of the oldest forms.
• Nine Star Ki astrology: Strongly connected to Feng Shui and the Lo Shu magic square, it utilizes a 9-year cycle based on the stars of the Big Dipper.
• The "Four Pillars of Destiny" (Ba Zi): This is the most elaborate system. It combines birth data (year, month, day, hour) with the Five Elements.

Historical Difference from Zodiacal Astrology

Unlike our solar zodiac, the signs of Chinese astrology are not linked to the Sun but to the Moon, and more precisely to lunar years. The system operates on a 60-year cycle, combining the 12 animals and the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water).

The Chinese New Year never falls on a fixed date, as it follows the second New Moon after the winter solstice. We are currently in 2026, the year of the Fire Horse (starting February 17th).

The Legend of the 12 Animals

While the official history is complex, the legend is renowned. It is said that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited the animals to celebrate the New Year. Only twelve responded to the call. Their order of arrival determined their place in the cycle:

3. The Tiger
4. The Rabbit (or Cat)
5. The Dragon
6. The Snake
7. The Horse
8. The Goat (or Ram)
9. The Monkey
10. The Rooster
11. The Dog
12. The Pig
