At this time, this discipline was not intended for individuals but for the State: it served to predict political events and validate the Emperor's authority.
For centuries, emperors prohibited the populace from practicing celestial observation, fearing that rivals might use the stars to pinpoint periods of dynastic weakness and attempt an overthrow.
With celestial observation thus prohibited, parallel systems began to develop. These are sometimes closer to numerology than to Western astrology as we know it, as they are based on calendar cycles rather than the direct positions of visible planets in the sky.
