How reliable is the Chinese gender predictor calendar?

It is believed that the Chinese conception calendar is 90% reliable. However, no scientific study has validated this figure. This calendar should be used as a fun tool to wait for the second ultrasound scan of the pregnancy, which is much more reliable to determine the sex of the baby.

Indeed, the sex of the baby is really down to mother nature and depends on science. During fertilization, the mother's oocyte and the spermatozoon each bring their own genetic material:

22 chromosomes + one X chromosome for the oocyte;
22 chromosomes + one X or Y chromosome for the spermatozoon

Here, the two cells merge and give birth to a single cell, which then contains the complete genetic material to form a new being: 44 chromosomes + 1 pair of sex chromosomes. This genetic program contains the sex of the baby, which in this case depends on the sex chromosome brought by the spermatozoon:

If the spermatozoon brought a chromosome X, the baby carries the pair XX: it will be a girl
if it carried the Y chromosome, the baby will have the XY pair: it will be a boy.

Knowing that there are as many spermatozoa carrying the Y or X chromosome, there is as much chance to have a girl as a boy.
