Divided Time: The 12 Earthly Branches (Hours)
If the year defines your deepest character (the animal sign), the time of birth defines your "traveling companion" or ascendant. The principle of Chinese astrology divides the day into 12 two-hour segments, called the "terrestrial branches":
- 23h00 - 01h00: Rat
- 01h00 - 03h00: Buffalo (Ox)
- 03h00 - 05h00: Tiger
- 05h00 - 07h00: Hare (Rabbit or Cat)
- 07h00 - 09h00: Dragon
- 09h00 - 11h00: Snake
- 11h00 - 13h00: Horse
- 13h00 - 15h00: Goat
- 15h00 - 17h00: Monkey
- 17h00 - 19h00: Rooster
- 19h00 - 21h00: Dog
- 21h00 - 23h00: Pig (Boar)
Astral Structure: Houses and Guardians
For more advanced calculations, Chinese astrology divides the sky into complex zones. The lunar month is segmented into 28 astral houses, corresponding to the Moon's path. These houses are grouped into four cardinal sectors, each protected by a mythical animal, the "Celestial Guardians":
- East: The Azure Dragon (power and benevolence)
- North: The Black Tortoise (longevity and stability, often represented embraced by a snake)
- West: White Tiger (protection and military strength)
- South: Vermilion Bird (phoenix, symbol of resurrection)
Finally, around the Pole Star, Chinese astronomers distinguished three "enclosures" (imperial, middle and lower) representing the organization of celestial society, mirror of terrestrial society.
