The Principles of Chinese Astrology: Cycles, Elements, and More

Last updated by Susan Taylor

Chinese astrology amalgamates various astral data, encompassing not only the day, month, and year of birth, but also the precise hour. This intricate framework facilitates the attribution of one of the twelve zodiacal signs to an individual, each sign intrinsically connected to the five elemental forces.

The principle of Chinese astrology is based on a skilful calculation of time and astronomy. Unlike Western astrology, which is based on the solar cycle (months), the Chinese system is luni-solar. It combines birth data (year, month, day, time) to associate each person with an animal, an element and a polarity. It is this combination that forms the great 60-year cycle, fundamental to understanding one's destiny.

The basics : Planets and Elements (Wu Xing)

At the heart of Chinese astrology are the five elements. They are not merely materials, but forces in motion, associated with the five major planets of the solar system:

  • Jupiter is associated with Wood
  • Mars is associated with Fire
  • Saturn is associated with Earth
  • Venus is associated with Metal
  • Mercury is associated with Water

To understand your birth chart, you need to know your birth element. To find out your Chinese element, simply look at the last digit of your birth year:

  • Years ending in 0 or 1: Metal element (Jīn)
  • Years ending in 2 or 3: Water element (Shuǐ)
  • Years ending with 4 or 5: Wood element (Mù)
  • Years ending with 6 or 7: Fire Element (Huǒ)
  • Years ending in 8 or 9: Earth Element (Tǔ)

The binary cycle: Yin and Yang

The second great principle is polarity. The animal cycle of the zodiac is not only combined with the five elements, but also with the binary cycle of Yin and Yang. Each year is tinged with either feminine (Yin) or masculine (Yang) energy.

To put it simply: even-numbered years are Yang (e.g. 2026), and odd-numbered years are Yin (e.g. 2025). This polarity directly influences the compatibility of Chinese signs. For example, a Wood Rat (Yang) will get along differently with a Water Ox (Yin).

Divided time: The 12 Earthly Branches (Hours)

If the year defines your deepest character (the animal sign), the time of birth defines your "travelling companion" or ascendant. The principle of Chinese astrology divides the day into 12 two-hour segments, called the "terrestrial branches":

  • 23h00 - 01h00 : Rat
  • 01h00 - 03h00 : Buffalo (Ox)
  • 03h00 - 05h00: Tiger
  • 05h00 - 07h00: Hare (Rabbit or Cat)
  • 07h00 - 09h00: Dragon
  • 09h00 - 11h00: Snake
  • 11h00 - 13h00: Horse
  • 13h00 - 15h00 : Goat
  • 15h00 - 17h00 : Monkey
  • 17h00 - 19h00 : Rooster
  • 19h00 - 21h00 : Dog
  • 21h00 - 23h00: Pig (Boar)

Astral structure: Houses and Guardians

For more advanced calculations, Chinese astrology divides the sky into complex zones. The lunar month is segmented into 28 astral houses, corresponding to the Moon's path. These houses are grouped into four cardinal sectors, each protected by a mythical animal, the "Celestial Guardians":

  • East: The Azure Dragon (power and benevolence)
  • North: The Black Tortoise (Longevity and stability, often represented embraced by a snake)
  • West: White Tiger (Protection and military strength)
  • South: Vermilion Bird (Phoenix, symbol of resurrection)

Finally, around the Pole Star, Chinese astronomers distinguished three "enclosures" (imperial, middle and lower) representing the organization of celestial society, mirror of terrestrial society.
