Archangel Camael: mending a broken heart

Camael is the archangel of love — starting with the love you have for yourself. That nuance changes everything: people call him for a broken heart, and he starts with self-esteem. His name is rendered “He who sees God”, in the sense of the one who sees beauty everywhere, including where you no longer see it. He is one of the nine ruling archangels.

If you were born between 3 September and 13 October, Camael is the archangel who watches over your guardian angel.

Who is Archangel Camael?

Camael rules the choir of the Powers, the fifth of the nine choirs of the Kabbalah, under the Sephirah Gevurah. He is also met as Chamuel, Kamael, Samuel or Camiel. Tradition makes him the archangel of love and compassion, and gives him a pink light — the one you picture around yourself when you call on him.

Love that begins with yourself

Camael is the archangel people turn to when love hurts. But tradition immediately shifts the request: real love is first the love you have for yourself. That is why he is credited with repairing self-esteem before repairing a couple — and why he is prayed to after a break-up rather than during one.

He also teaches loving without holding. Loving others without trying to control them, keep them or smother them: tradition insists on this, because it is the hardest form of love to sustain. People ask him for faithfulness, tolerance, and enough self-love not to demand.

One last, more surprising domain: finding what has been lost. An object you were attached to, a bond you thought undone. The prayer this page has carried for years opens on exactly that — “I have lost what I loved” — and reminds you that nothing is ever truly lost.

How to invoke Archangel Camael?

One piece of traditional advice worth following: wait for the storm to pass. People think of him in panic or in sharp grief, but a clear request is formed once calm returns. Take the time to know what you actually want to ask him.

His colour is pink. Wear pink, light a pink candle, or simply picture that ray around you. A rose quartz held in the hand — the stone of love — goes well with the request; rhodonite does the same job.

The pink ray

Every archangel has his colour, and Camael’s is pink — the colour of love in traditional symbolism. It is not mere decoration: the pink light is what you picture in order to feel surrounded, and that exercise does much of the work.

The matching stone is rose quartz, which the three previous editions of this page independently call the stone of love. You keep it on you, or in your hand while praying, to bring back inner calm before saying anything at all.
