Archangel Tsaphkiel: the keeper of silence

Tsaphkiel is the archangel of silence. He is the least known of the nine rulers, and that makes sense: he performs no spectacular miracle, he settles nothing, he heals nothing. His work is slower and rarer — understanding. Kabbalistic tradition places him at the head of the Thrones, under the Sephirah Binah, the Sephirah of Intelligence.

Who is Archangel Tsaphkiel?

Tsaphkiel — also written Binael, Zaphkiel or Tzaphqiel — rules the choir of the Thrones, the third of the nine choirs of the Kabbalah. His name comes from the Hebrew root ts-p-h, meaning to watch, to keep vigil, to contemplate: it is most often rendered as “contemplation of God”, sometimes as “the watchman of God” or “the vision of God”. All three say the same thing: he looks, and he makes you see.

The Thrones: those who carry the seat of God

Tsaphkiel’s choir bears a name that is also an object. The Thrones — the Aralim of Hebrew tradition — are the ones on which the divine seat rests. They neither fight nor announce: they receive the light and give it a shape, a measure, a limit. That is what makes them the choir of justice, in the sense of right measure rather than verdict.

Their Sephirah is Binah, Understanding, the third on the Tree of Life, the one tradition ties to Saturn — long time, structure, whatever contains. Binah is itself called Khorsia, the Throne. So Tsaphkiel is not the archangel who will pull you out of an ordeal: he is the one under whose authority it takes on meaning.

He is absent from the Bible, like Raziel and Metatron: he appears in Jewish mysticism and in the Kabbalistic correspondence tables, where he stands as the Sephirotic archangel of Binah. That is also why he stayed discreet — he has no battle and no famous apparition to tell.

How to invoke Archangel Tsaphkiel?

You do not call him in a hurry. Tsaphkiel answers stillness: pick a moment when you expect nothing in particular, sit down, and stay a little longer than usual. Evening suits him better than morning, and silence better than music.

His colour is indigo, almost black, and his stones are lapis lazuli and sodalite — two deep blues that extend that shade rather than contradict it. Ask a question rather than making a request: he answers “what am I not seeing?” far better than “make it so that…”.
