What is the difference between the "intermediate cards" and the "minor arcana"?
Unlike most tarots, which only tell major from minor, the Persian tarot adds a third category: the 16 intermediate cards (Kings, Queens, Knights, Aces) stand for people or profiles, while the 16 minor arcana speak of concrete situations and events.
What are the Owls for?
The four Owls are cards in a class of their own, outside the three other categories. They give the reading a particular tone and work almost like markers in their own right.
Does the Persian tarot really come from Persia?
Not quite. Its imagery draws on the Arabian Nights and on oriental symbolism, but the deck as we know it is the personal creation of Madame Indira, in the 1980s — not the rediscovery of an ancient Persian tradition.
Can a card be read on its own?
No. Every card has its meaning coloured by its neighbours. A positive arcanum like the Sun can be tempered by a Scimitar nearby, while a difficult card such as Illness can be softened by the Hand of Fatima.
