What kind of question the cross spread answers

The cross does not tell a trajectory the way the three-card spread does: it breaks a situation into four angles and makes them converge. So it needs a question that is already framed.

The 5 positions of the cross

You always read the Synthetic Arcana first, then the cross going top, left, bottom, right. Each position has a fixed role. Four steps are enough: write your question on a blank sheet, clear and specific; shuffle the deck while concentrating on it; draw four cards at random and lay them crosswise; then calculate the fifth.

Variants, and the mistakes to avoid

The fifth card can also be drawn at random instead of calculated. That is the simplified version, useful with a deck whose cards are not numbered — an oracle, for instance.

Never start with the right card. It is the natural temptation, since it speaks of the future. But it only makes sense after the other three, and after the synthesis.

Do not look for a conclusion. The cross does not give one: the fourth card indicates a likely evolution, never a settled outcome.

If the Synthetic Arcana feels off-topic, it usually means the original question was too. Reword it and start again — that is exactly what this card is for.
