How To Draw Tarot Cards: The Beginner's Step-By-Step

This is not a spread, it is a how-to. Before choosing a method you need a deck you like, a question that holds up, and a little quiet. Six steps are enough — and the sixth, the one everyone skips, is the one that makes you better.

In short

6 steps, from choosing a deck to rereading your notes.

No prerequisites: this is the starting point.

One rule above all others: ask an open question.

A 22-day exercise to train your ear.

The questions that make a good reading

This is where everything is decided. A vague question gives a vague reading; a closed one reduces tarot to a coin toss. Tarot is a tool for introspection: it answers best when you ask it about yourself.

✅ Questions that work

  • “What obstacles must I get past to succeed in my career?”
  • “How can I improve my relationship with X?”
  • “Where should I put my effort in the coming months?”

❌ Questions to avoid

  • Too open: “What does the future hold for me?”
  • Closed ones: they cap the depth of the guidance
  • About other people's actions or feelings, beyond your control

The 6 steps of a reading

The first five are done once and for all, or nearly; only the wording and the reading are replayed each time. Once the question is set, everything else follows on.

1

Choose your deck

the one you feel drawn to

Every deck has its own energy and symbolism. The Tarot of Marseille, in use since the 17th century, suits everyday questions; the Belline Oracle speaks to those with some practice; the Angel Tarot brings comfort more than predictions. Let intuition guide you — the visual style of the cards counts more than you would think in the bond you form with them.

2

Get to know it

handle it, look at it

Take the cards in your hands, look at them, touch them. Understand the split between major arcana — life's big themes — and minor arcana, which deal with the everyday. Know them without trying to memorise them: meaning comes from contemplation, not recitation.

3

Set the moment

a quiet place, soft light

Settle somewhere calm, away from harsh light. A few candles help make this something other than a rushed consultation. Some readers cleanse their deck before starting; what matters most is taking a few breaths before you draw.

4

Word the question

clear, open, about you

This is the decisive step, the one that sets the quality of everything else. Write it down if you need to: a question you cannot write is a question you do not have yet.

5

Shuffle, cut, lay out

holding the question in mind

Shuffle slowly while keeping your question present. Then cut the deck — custom has you make three piles and rebuild them in whatever order feels right, or cut with your left hand. Then pick your method, from the simplest to the fullest.

6

Read, then write it down

the step everyone skips

Look first at how the cards answer one another, before their meaning in isolation: position and orientation change the reading. Then note everything — the date, the question, the cards, your first interpretation and what you felt. It is the journal that makes you better, not the number of readings.

The 22-day exercise

Before doing real readings, there is a simple drill that teaches the major arcana through experience rather than by heart.

22 days, then 22 more

  • The first 22 days — each morning, draw a major arcanum at random and set it face down without looking at it.
  • In the evening, turn it over. You will often find it matches the tone your day actually had.
  • The next 22 days — same drill, but try to guess the card in the morning, before turning it over at night.

→ After those 44 days you will know the 22 majors differently from having learnt them: you will have lived them. And you will be ready for your first real readings.

What helps you progress, and what blocks you

Regularity beats quantity. A few cards a day are worth more than one big reading a month: repetition is what builds intuition.

Do not try to memorise the meanings. A book is a landmark, not a script. What the card makes you feel counts as much as what the book says about it.

Reread your old readings. Coming back to your journal weeks later is how recurring themes surface — and how your interpretation sharpens.

Do not redo a reading you dislike. Reword the question or come back later: stacking readings only blurs the first message.

And keep in mind what tarot is: a tool for introspection and personal growth. It sheds light, it does not decide.

Do your first reading

Three cards and one open question: the best possible starting point. The whole reading logic is already there.

What does the Tarot of Marseille hold for you today?

Let your thoughts settle for a moment. Then turn the cards to discover what they have to reveal.

✦ ✦ ✦

Your questions about starting with tarot

Which deck should I start with?

The Tarot of Marseille remains the best way in: its symbolism is classic and direct, and it suits general predictions as much as everyday questions.

That said, the right deck is the one you feel drawn to. Look at several and note which one holds you: the visual style plays a large part in the bond you will form with it.

Do I need to cleanse my deck?

Some readers do it systematically: tapping the deck, passing it through smoke, or leaving it out overnight under the moon. Others do without entirely.

What there is agreement on is rather the opposite: handle your deck often. The more you take it in your hands, the more it takes on your own energy — and the sharper your readings get.

How long does it take to learn to read?

A few weeks are enough to draw three cards usefully. Mastering a method, though, takes several weeks of regular practice — and that holds for each method separately.

So it is better to work one for a long time than to skim ten.
