The inverted pyramid comes from the Grand Etteilla, a divinatory deck popular in the 18th century. Its structure widens downward: you start from what is playing out today between two people and work up to what will be left of it a year from now.

The four levels of the pyramid
The pyramid is read bottom to top, from widest to narrowest: each level tightens the analysis and pushes the horizon further out. One particularity: the Consultant card, the one that stands for you, is not drawn at random — you choose it before you begin.

How to read it from the bottom up
The inverted pyramid is read in the order it is built, and in pairs: the meaning comes from setting the two viewpoints against each other.
The reading order, level by level
- The base first, left column — your card, your frame of mind, what comes from outside. You then know what the relationship rests on from your side.
- Then the right column — the other person's three cards. Comparing the two trios is what reveals the misunderstandings.
- Next the synthesis card, at the centre of the second line: it says what those two positions become after three months.

It is a long spread. Twelve cards across four levels take time and method: if you are starting out, practise on three cards first.

Do not use it for a closed question. It does not say whether a story will work: it describes dispositions, motivations and timing.
The Grand Etteilla gives it its symbolic depth, but the structure works with any deck whose cards you know well.
And a year is a long time: what the apex announces stays a trend, one your decisions can bend at any point.
