Celtic Cross: The 10 Cards, Position By Position

The Celtic Cross is the most complete of the classic spreads. Ten cards, laid in two stages — a central cross of six, then a column of four — exploring in turn what you are living, what holds you back, what you carry without knowing it, and where all of it is heading.

When to lay a Celtic Cross

This spread answers crossroads situations: a meeting, a career change, a personal project, a life stocktake. It informs you not only about yourself but about everything coming from outside — which is what makes it valuable when a situation is moving.

The layout and the 10 cards

The spread uses the 22 major arcana, in two stages. The central cross: card 1 in the middle, card 2 laid horizontally across it, card 3 above card 1, card 4 below, card 5 to the left, card 6 to the right. The right-hand column: card 7 at the bottom, then 8, 9 and 10 going up. Three points of practice: settle somewhere quiet so you can turn inward, be clear about the area you are reading, and — out of respect for the tarot — lay the cards on a cloth, preferably purple or blue.

The two-circle Celtic Cross. An older tradition, attested by a few texts in ogham script, reads the ten cards not as a cross and a column but as two concentric circles: the inner circle for what comes from you (roots, innate talents, hindrances, assets, potential for rising), the outer circle for what comes from the world (learned talents, outside hindrances and supports, success, influence). Reading follows two axes: from nadir to zenith, your axis of elevation, and from east to west, what hinders or helps you.

The Celtic Cross for love applies the same layout to matters of the heart, reading cards 8 and 9 as the climate around the couple.

The career Celtic Cross takes it to working life, with the same ten arcana and the same three-month horizon.

Across every version, one constant: this is a dated spread. Three months is short enough to be checkable and long enough for a situation to move.
