How to read it without drowning
Start with the dominants. Before going into detail, look at where the strongest cards fell: they point to the areas that will carry the year.
Look at the quiet houses too. A neutral card on a house does not mean nothing will happen there: it says that area will not be the year's main stage.
Do not redo the spread for several months for the same person: it covers twelve months, and relaunching it early only adds noise.
This spread is extremely revealing, but it is used with a certain distance: it draws trends across areas, not dated events.
And as always, a year turns on your decisions as much as on the cards.

Do I need to know astrology to lay it?
You need to know the twelve houses and the area of life each covers — that is all. There is no birth chart to calculate: here the houses serve as a reading grid, not as a map of the sky.
The list above is enough to get started.
Why only the major arcana?
Because they are the ones carrying planetary correspondences, and therefore the ones that speak to the houses. That correspondence is what the whole spread rests on.
The 56 minor arcana would add detail where you are looking for broad direction.
When in the year should I lay it?
Whenever you like: the wheel covers the twelve months following the reading, not the calendar year. Many lay it on their birthday, which lines it up with their solar return.
What matters is letting several months pass before doing it again.
