Origins and Traditions of Birthstones
The tradition of birthstones dates back to very ancient times. It is said to have begun with Aaron, Moses' brother, who, in the Old Testament, wore a breastplate adorned with 12 stones representing the 12 months of the year. Considered lucky charms, these stones were initially connected to the astrological signs. Later, these were replaced by the months of the year with the creation of the first modern calendar in 1752.
This birthstone tradition became firmly established in Germany around 1560, where it was common to gift a stone upon a child's birth. The modern list of birthstones was defined in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers (now known as Jewelers of America). This list is, of course, supplemented by other stones that can also be associated with certain months.
