The 7 positions of the arc
Turn the cards in order, 1 to 7, then reread the whole arc as one. Positions 1 to 5 make the diagnosis; the last two give what follows. The seven cards are laid in an arc, left to right, the fourth at the midpoint of the curve. Some readers open the horseshoe upward, others downward: it changes nothing in the reading.

How the arc is read
The horseshoe is not read card by card to the end: it is read in two stages, then as a whole.
Reading in two stages
- Cards 1 to 5 first — they make the diagnosis. By the end of that block you know where the situation comes from, what blocks it, and what weighs on it from within and from without.
- Then card 6, set against card 4 — the advice answers the obstacle. This is the most important pair in the spread.
- Finally card 7, read as the consequence of following that advice, not as a verdict.
- And last, the whole arc — cards 3 and 5 answer each other on either side of the midpoint: the unseen on one side, the outside on the other.
→ If card 7 displeases you, do not redraw the spread: go back to card 6 instead. It says precisely what would change the outcome.

Another school, and what to avoid
Not every tradition assigns the same positions. One widespread school reads the third card as the near future, the fourth as “the answer”, the fifth as the surrounding energy and the sixth as your hopes and fears. Neither is superior: pick one and stay with it.
Do not switch grids mid-reading. A position whose meaning drifts from one reading to the next no longer means anything — and that matters more here than elsewhere, since two schools coexist.
Do not read the advice card as a prediction. It says what would be good to do, not what will happen.
Against the Celtic Cross, the horseshoe is faster and explicitly names an action to take; the Celtic Cross covers more but singles out no advice card. It comes down to what you need: a panorama, or a recommendation.
And the outcome stays a trend. What you do with it is yours.

Both are practised. Some readers lay the arc opening upward, others downward: it changes neither the order nor the meaning of the positions.
What matters is that the fourth card — the obstacle — sits at the midpoint of the curve.
How does it differ from the cross spread?
The horseshoe deepens the cross: it adds one card for the obstacles and one for the advice, around the present situation.
If your question is already sharp and you want a tight answer, the cross spread stays more direct. The horseshoe is for when you do not yet know what is blocking you.
Do I have to use all 78 cards?
Nothing requires it. This spread works with the 22 major arcana as well as with the full deck; the positions do not depend on the cards.
With all 78, the external-influences card gains precision, since court cards there often point to specific people.
