How to read two branches against each other
You never read one branch to the end and then the other: you move forward in step, comparing the cards of the same rank.
The comparison method
- The central card alone first — it says what is really at stake. Sometimes it reveals that the question you asked was not the right one.
- Then the first card of each branch, side by side — what each option asks of you at the outset.
- Then the next ones, always in pairs — the gap between the two trajectories widens or narrows as you go down the ranks.
- Finally, reread the central card in the light of both branches: it often takes on another meaning.

Three things to keep in mind
Do not neglect the core-issue card. This is the most common mistake: people rush to the branches to see which one wins, when the central card reframes the whole spread.
Do not load the spread with hopes about the outcome. If you already know which option you want to win, you will read the cards accordingly — and the spread will have been pointless.
Expect neither an exact date nor a person's name. This spread draws trends, not a calendar.
A lighter variant exists for two options only: the three-card spread in its for-and-against form, with one card for what favours you, one for what stands in your way and one for the synthesis.
And as always: the spread compares paths, it does not walk them for you. The decision stays yours.

It depends on the layout. In a pyramid, with two options, each branch gets a short run of cards. In a fan, beyond three options, one or two cards per option is enough — any more and the spread becomes unreadable.
All told, count on 6 to 12 cards depending on the number of possibilities.
Can I compare more than four options?
Technically yes, the fan extends. In practice, beyond four the reading thins out and every option starts to look like the others.

What if both branches look equally good?
That is an answer in itself: both paths lead to comparable situations, and the choice is playing out somewhere other than in their consequences.
