Choice Spread: Weighing Two Options With The Cards

The choice spread does not answer a question: it compares options. A central card sets out the common stake, then each possibility gets its own branch of cards — and it is by putting those trajectories side by side that the decision becomes clear.

When to lay a choice spread

This spread earns its keep as soon as a decision is due and the options are clearly named. It does not say which one is right: it shows where each one leads, which is often more useful.

However many possibilities there are, one card is laid at the centre first: it is what holds the whole spread together. The layout depends on the number of options. With two, you work in a pyramid; beyond three, in a fan — a layout also called the round table.

You never read one branch to the end and then the other: you move forward in step, comparing the cards of the same rank.

Three things to keep in mind

Do not neglect the core-issue card. This is the most common mistake: people rush to the branches to see which one wins, when the central card reframes the whole spread.

Do not load the spread with hopes about the outcome. If you already know which option you want to win, you will read the cards accordingly — and the spread will have been pointless.

Expect neither an exact date nor a person's name. This spread draws trends, not a calendar.

A lighter variant exists for two options only: the three-card spread in its for-and-against form, with one card for what favours you, one for what stands in your way and one for the synthesis.
