Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs and Spades appear in France in the late 15th century, as a graphic simplification of the German suits. They are cousins of the Latin suits — cups, coins, batons, swords — still used by the Tarot de Marseille and the Spanish deck. Hearts answers to the Latin cup.
Careful, though: this kinship is graphic and historical, not divinatory. The meanings of the Tarot do not carry over to a 32-card deck — they are two distinct systems.
