Tourmaline: one name for a thousand colors
Tourmalines come in every color, and the name says so: it comes from Sinhalese, the language of Sri Lanka, turmali, “stone of many colors.” The dominant color depends on its chemical elements, since tourmaline is a family of borosilicates that can contain iron, magnesium or lithium.
Each hue has its own name: schorl for black, the most common; rubellite for pink and red; verdelite for green; indicolite for blue. Some crystals change color from one end to the other, and “watermelon” tourmaline shows, when sliced, a pink heart ringed with green.
