Origins of the Onyx
The word "Onyx" comes from the Greek "onux", or even from the Sanskrit "nakhàh" meaning "nail". According to the legend, Cupid found Venus asleep on the bank of a river one day and cut her nails with the iron of one of his arrows and left the clippings scattered on the ground. The Fates picked them up and turned them into a fine stone.
➡ In the Middle Ages, miraculous healing properties were attributed to the onyx stone, but because of its color; a reddish brown tending to go black, it was said that it could also exert a bad influence. It was thought that it could be the cause of disputes, conflicts or breakups, in couples or between neighbors.
