Where does agate come from? A stone from Sicily
The name agate comes from the Greek “Akhatês”, which refers to this variety of chalcedony. In Antiquity, farmers wore an agate or hung it on their plow to bring about better, more abundant harvests. It was considered the lucky charm of gardeners.
Thanks to its protective virtues, it was also a symbol of long life. In the Middle Ages, it was believed to guard against spells, poison, demons and evil in general, and to bring wealth to whoever wore it. Carved into seals, cameos and cups since ancient times, it has always been one of the most worked stones in history.
