The Origin of Superstitions: Where Do Our Beliefs Come From?

Legends and superstitions are handed down from generation to generation, so much so that we all know the omens of bad luck without knowing anything about where they come from.

Black cat, broken mirror, open umbrella, ladder, 13 at the table: here is where the most famous superstitions come from, and how to ward off bad luck.

✦

Why superstitions cross the centuries

A superstition is almost always born of a story: a real danger, a religious account, an ancient rite. The story fades, the gesture remains, passed from parents to children.

They answer a very old need: to protect ourselves from what we cannot control, and to give meaning to the blows of fate. Knowing their origin takes nothing away from their symbolic power: it gives them depth.

✦ ✦

The origins of 7 famous superstitions

Behind each one lies a story:

1. Walking under a ladder

A ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangle, a sacred figure since ancient Egypt and later a symbol of the Trinity: walking through it meant breaking it. In the Middle Ages, you could also get a paint pot or a tool on your head.

2. Opening an umbrella indoors

The first umbrellas with metal frames appeared in the 18th century: opened in a house, they injured those nearby. Hence the idea that opening one under a roof brought misfortune on the household.

3. Breaking a mirror

In antiquity, seers and oracles read the future in mirrors covered with a film of water: a broken mirror was a very bad omen. The Romans added the seven years: the time, they thought, for the soul to renew itself.

4. A black cat crossing your path

The superstition appeared in medieval Europe, when the fear of witchcraft made the black cat the witches’ companion. In Britain and Japan, though, a black cat is a sign of good luck.

5. Thirteen at the table

It refers to the Last Supper, Christ’s final meal with his twelve apostles before the crucifixion. Norse mythology echoes it: Loki, the thirteenth guest at a banquet of the gods.

6. Spilling salt

Precious salt sealed pacts and hospitality: spilling it foretold a quarrel. In Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, an overturned salt cellar sits in front of Judas.

7. Bread upside down

A French tradition: in the Middle Ages, bakers kept an upturned loaf on the stall for the executioner. Placing bread upside down on the table invites misfortune to your table.

How to ward off bad luck

For each omen, tradition has its remedy:

  • Knock on wood after an overconfident word, to call on the protection of the tree spirits.
  • Throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder after spilling it: that is where, they say, bad luck stands.
  • Bury the pieces of a broken mirror, or throw them into running water, so that the misfortune goes away with them.
  • Make a wish when a black cat crosses your path: it then switches sides.
  • Cross your fingers, in memory of the discreet sign of the cross of the early Christians.

And to attract luck, nothing beats the lucky omens.
