Can an Animal Really Choose Us?

Contemporary spirituality speaks of the soul contract: before incarnating, souls would agree on the encounters that will help them grow, and many believe this pact isn't limited to humans. Just like the souls who come into your life for a reason, an animal would arrive at exactly the right moment.

Buddhism teaches that rebirth can take an animal form: the Jataka tales, stories of the Buddha's past lives, show him as a hare, a monkey or a deer. It's one of the many visions of reincarnation. In the Christian West, Saint Francis of Assisi called animals his brothers and sisters, and every October, around his feast day, many American churches hold a Blessing of the Animals.

This bond isn't something you prove, it's something you recognize. I see two stages in it: the signs of the encounter, then the mission itself.

Honoring Their Mission and Living Their Departure: What Should You Do?

An animal who chose you asks for almost nothing, except to be listened to. Here are three gestures to honor this bond, from the first day to the last.

• Really listen to them. Every evening, share a few minutes of silence together, no screens. Note the moments they come to you: that's where their mission speaks.
• Thank them out loud. Tell them what they bring you. Light a white candle on the anniversary of their arrival: gratitude feeds the bond.
• When they leave, let the bond live on. Keep something of theirs, keep talking to them. Grief is the measure of the love you gave; let it take its place.

Many find comfort in the “Rainbow Bridge,” an anonymous poem that began circulating in the 1980s and 1990s. It imagines departed animals waiting for their humans in a green meadow, at the foot of a bridge of light. And if no sign comes, remember that this silence isn't an absence of connection. Sometimes, much later, a new animal crosses your path: some signs are even about to adopt a cat or a dog.

Your animal doesn't walk the path for you: they walk part of yours by your side. What they came to teach you is yours to hear, and yours to keep alive. Move forward with confidence and serenity.
