Enter your date, time and place of birth: your Moon and your houses appear in seconds.
She has no mass and no light, yet she says a lot. Lilith, the Black Moon, marks the part of you that you learned to keep quiet in order to be accepted: a desire, an anger, a need for freedom.
Her sign tells you which one, her house tells you where. And the myth explains why she was cast as a demon for so long. Ready to look her in the eye? 🖤
Lilith isn't a celestial body. She's a calculated point. The orbit of the Moon isn't a circle but an ellipse, with two foci. Earth sits at the first one. The second is empty, and that's where, in the direction of the point where the Moon is farthest from us, astrologers place the Black Moon.
In a chart, she speaks of your weak spots, your contradictions, what you lacked. Above all, she shows how you react to them. I read her as the room where you stored everything that bothered other people: not a flaw, but a part of you that was put on mute. She's read by sign and by house in your birth chart, just like your Moon sign.

✦
Your Achilles' heel, the place where a careless word hurts more than anywhere else.
What was missing, and the fear of going without it again.
What attracts you as much as it worries you. Often, it's the same thing.
All or nothing: Lilith loves extremes. She shows the reflex you developed so you wouldn't get hurt again.
None of this is fate. The Black Moon is a tool for self-knowledge: she points to a path for growth, right where you once held yourself back.
✦
Your Lilith sign tells you what you learned to silence. Her house tells you in which area of life, and that's what our guide to the astrological houses is all about. Lilith spends about nine months in each sign, so people born in the same year often share the same one.
ambition held back
You want to assert yourself, but competition makes you uneasy, or you don't own it. So you hold back… until the day it all comes out at once, too loudly. Then you feel guilty about being so impulsive.
Your strength: a very real drive to stand your ground.
Your challenge: say “I want this” before the pressure spills over.
the question of having
Either you're deeply attached to your belongings, or you reject anything that looks like materialism. And you may swing from one to the other over a lifetime.
Your strength: you know the value of what you have.
Your challenge: find the middle ground between keeping it all and rejecting it all.
the two faces
Your dual side is amplified. You can feel like two people at once, with two faces depending on the moment. Your mind runs at full speed, sometimes to the point of wearing you out.
Your strength: a quick mind that sees every side of an idea.
Your challenge: let your head rest before it runs out of steam.
the wound in the nest
Here Lilith touches motherhood, fatherhood or your bond with your mother. She may have been too little reassuring, or on the contrary smothering. A fragile childhood can make it harder to build yourself.
Your strength: a sharp sense of what a real refuge is.
Your challenge: build yourself without waiting for the security you missed.
secret pride
You're proud, and very touchy. You need power, yet you constantly doubt you deserve it. You often feel exceptional, but either you censor yourself or you slip into delusions of grandeur.
Your strength: a real awareness of your own worth.
Your challenge: shine without apologizing or overdoing it.
the need to be accepted
You have a strong need to be accepted, and a tendency to give in to get there. Day to day, it's all or nothing: super organized and meticulous, or completely messy.
Your strength: a formidable eye for detail.
Your challenge: stop bending over backwards to earn your place.
drawn to trouble
You long for harmony with others, yet you're drawn to murky, rebellious, complicated people. Your need for justice is huge, and so is your fear of being judged.
Your strength: a sense of fairness that doesn't compromise.
Your challenge: stop letting the fear of judgment decide for you.
intensity at any cost
You need strong sensations to feel alive. Even if it means taking risks others would call pointless. Nothing lukewarm suits you, and it shows.
Your strength: an intensity that leaves no one indifferent.
Your challenge: seek intensity without putting yourself in danger.
the call of far away
Either a fierce will to succeed abroad, or a distrust of travel and anything foreign. In that case, the need for recognition takes over: promotion, status, the race for medals.
Your strength: a thirst for horizons that takes you far.
Your challenge: look for recognition somewhere other than in medals.
the father's shadow
The father figure weighs heavily. Fascination, domination or rejection of a father who was too authoritarian, feared or adored: nothing is neutral. A bit of a loner, you need independence as much as solitude.
Your strength: an independence no one can buy.
Your challenge: become your own authority, without copying or fighting his.
complicated friendships
Your relationship with friendship is complex. Few friends, or none, or on the contrary lots of them, but rather shallow ties. A betrayal can leave a lasting mark.
Your strength: a clear eye for the bonds that truly matter.
Your challenge: let a friendship grow deep without fearing betrayal.
inner vertigo
Your emotions overflow easily, and the line between dream and reality can blur. Big questions about the meaning of life live in you, and so does a fear of the void. In response, some impose an iron discipline on themselves to feel safe.
Your strength: a depth that touches the invisible.
Your challenge: keep your feet on the ground without switching off your dreams.
✦
The sign says what you kept quiet; the house says in which area of life it plays out. To know it, you need your time of birth. Example: Lilith in Leo in the 9th house reads as “Lilith in Leo,” then “Lilith in the 9th house.”
For the details of each area, head to our guide to the twelve houses.
Main traits: autonomy, challenge, authority. You're very independent and you impose yourself on others. You need challenges, and you have natural authority. The 1st house is the house of your rising sign.
Main traits: need to own, fear of lack. You have a strong need to own things. The risk: a major financial setback, or a life spent afraid of going without.
Main traits: wordplay, dark humor. You love playing with words, dark humor included. When it comes to studies, it's ambiguous: either obsession or rejection.
Main traits: childhood wound, need for roots. A loss or abandonment in childhood may have left you without roots. Your origins can weigh on you; you may also move far away and know exile.
Main traits: fear of not measuring up. Love life gets complicated: out of fear of not measuring up, you push feelings away. Self-esteem is at stake, and the relationship with children can be delicate.
Main traits: fear of illness, focus on the body. The fear of illness is strong, and so is the focus on your body. You tend to limit yourself and get stuck in habits. Sometimes with real virtuosity in one specific field.
Main traits: lucidity, high standards, listening. You need a partner, in love as in work, to flourish. Your clear view of others makes you demanding, and gifted for listening and counseling jobs.
Main traits: powerful unconscious, strong desires. The unconscious takes up a lot of room and keeps the trace of an old wound, a source of fears. Desires and fantasies are powerful. So is a gift for psychology and intuition.
Main traits: minority thinking, different values. You may adopt a philosophy, morality or religion different from the one that dominates around you. Following a minority doesn't scare you.
Main traits: huge ambition, fear of failure. Your ambition is huge, but the fear of failure can make you give up early. Hierarchy is a problem for you, and you may reject society itself.
Main traits: innovative mind, activism. You're drawn to jobs of the future and new technologies, and you need to stand up for a group. The flip side: you may face rejection or exclusion.
Main traits: spirituality, art, mediumship. You feel connected to the universe and the invisible. Spirituality, esotericism or mediumship attract you, and art is your way of expressing yourself.
✦
Lilith travels around the zodiac in about 8 years and 10 months, moving roughly forty degrees a year. So she returns to her birth position shortly before you turn 9, shortly before 18, then around 26 or 27: all ages when what you kept quiet tries to resurface.
There are two Liliths. Mean Lilith always moves in the same direction and never goes retrograde: she's the most widely used. True Lilith follows the Moon's actual, more erratic orbit; she swings up to about thirty degrees around the mean and often changes direction. The two can fall in different signs. For the Moon's other rhythms, see our lunar calendar.
✦
The name goes way back. In Mesopotamia, the lilītu were night spirits. The Bible uses the word only once, in Isaiah, and no one is quite sure whether it means a she-demon or a night bird.
The story that made her famous came later: the Alphabet of Ben Sira, written between the 8th and 10th centuries. There, Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the same earth as he was. She demands equality and refuses to submit. When Adam won't hear of it, she speaks the secret name of God and flies out of Eden. Three angels are sent to bring her back: she refuses to return.
Later legend turns her into a demon who threatens newborns. Goethe slips her into Faust in 1808, and Rossetti paints her as a femme fatale in Lady Lilith, between 1866 and 1868. A woman who said no, turned into a monster: that's exactly the story Lilith tells in a chart.
“We are equal, for we were both created from the earth.” — Lilith to Adam, in the Alphabet of Ben Sira
And in the sky? Nothing to see, literally. In 1918, the English astrologer Sepharial imagined a second, invisible moon and named it Lilith. It never existed, and the name passed to the empty point of the lunar orbit. For our original guide, read our article on the Black Moon.
✦
Your Black Moon Lilith isn't a sentence. She doesn't say what you're doomed to live, she shows what you set aside. What you do with it is up to you: look at it, tame it, and maybe give it its voice back.
Our editors' take
Your Lilith, read in full 🖤
Your Lilith sign is only one piece. Her house and aspects tell the rest of the story. An astrologer can read them with you, from your complete chart.
✦
You need a birth chart calculated from your date, time and place of birth. The date is often enough for the sign, since Lilith stays there about nine months. The time, however, is essential for the house, just like for your rising sign.
Yes. In astrology, “Black Moon” and “Lilith” refer to the same point of the lunar orbit. People sometimes say “Black Moon Lilith” to tell her apart from other points that share the name.
No. She shows a vulnerability, not a destiny. In astrology, she's a tool to know yourself better; scientifically, her influence hasn't been demonstrated. See her as an invitation to look at what you've set aside.
Mean Lilith is the most widely used: she moves steadily and never goes retrograde. True Lilith follows the Moon's actual orbit and can stray about thirty degrees from it. If the two fall in different signs, read both.
