Zodiac Symbols Meaning: The Myth Behind Each Sign

Ram’s head, crab’s claws, the centaur’s arrow: the meaning of the 12 zodiac symbols and the Greek myths hidden behind each sign.

Zodiac Symbols Meaning: The Myth Behind Each Sign

Jewelry, key rings, tattoos: zodiac symbols follow us everywhere. But behind each glyph lies a myth, and that story says a lot about your sign’s character.

Ram’s head, crab’s claws, the centaur’s arrow: discover the myth hidden behind the symbol of your zodiac sign.

✦

The myth behind each zodiac symbol

Find your sign, its symbol and its story:

Aries

♈ Aries

The ram’s head

In mythology, it is the ram with the Golden Fleece that Jason sets out to find aboard the Argo; its fleece, guarded by a dragon, is a hard-won prize. Like the ram, Aries natives are fighters who don’t give up.

Taurus

♉ Taurus

The bull’s head

In ancient societies, the bull stood for fertility. Its strength and stability are precious assets for those with the Sun in this sign.

Gemini

♊ Gemini

The twins

They are Castor and Pollux, sons of Leda and the swan, Zeus in disguise. The brothers had very different personalities: hence the dual nature of Gemini.

Cancer

♋ Cancer

The crab’s claws

The goddess Hera sent a crab against Hercules to stop him killing the Hydra of Lerna; the hero crushed it, and the crab rose to the sky. Its sacrifice lives on in Cancer’s protective love.

Leo

♌ Leo

The lion’s head

The first of Hercules’s twelve labors was to defeat the Nemean lion, whose hide no arrow could pierce. Leo is a sign of strength and light that yields only to a very powerful opponent.

Virgo

♍ Virgo

The maiden and the wheat

Its M-shaped glyph depicts the maiden; its loop is said to be a freshly harvested ear of wheat, a memory of ancient harvest cults. Purity of mind and fertility suit Virgo natives well.

Libra

♎ Libra

The scales

They belong to Astraea, goddess of justice. Many Libra natives are excellent judges and mediators, able to weigh the pros and cons in any situation.

Scorpio

♏ Scorpio

The M and the stinger

Its glyph is said to be the M of Mars, its planet, extended by the stinger. The hunter Orion boasted no animal could kill him: the scorpion proved him wrong. When challenged, Scorpio summons all its strength.

Sagittarius

♐ Sagittarius

The archer’s arrow

Sagittarius is a centaur: born of a Sumerian legend, it takes on among the Greeks the features of Chiron, the wise and kind centaur. Hence natives who love fun but can fight when conflict comes.

Capricorn

♑ Capricorn

The sea-goat

During the war against the monster Typhon, the god Pan leapt into the Nile and turned into a creature half goat, half fish: the sea-goat. Capricorns use this hero’s cleverness to move forward in life.

Aquarius

♒ Aquarius

The waves of water

Its two wavy lines recall the Egyptian sign for water, and Hapi, god of the Nile, pouring water from two jars onto the earth. Aquarians spread their original vision of the world as one waters a garden.

Pisces

♓ Pisces

The two fish

Pursued by the monster Typhon, Aphrodite and her son Eros leapt into a river and turned into fish, tied together by a cord. Pisces natives feel like fish in water in the meanders of their imagination.

Why do the signs have symbols?

Astrologers use symbols as shorthand: one glyph per sign, drawn in a single stroke, to read a birth chart at a glance. They appear in Greek papyri from Egypt, then in medieval manuscripts.

Today, with horoscopes everywhere, the symbols follow us: jewelry, bags, stickers. Knowing your sign’s myth means learning a little more about yourself: these stories shed light on the timeless character linked to your Sun sign.

The zodiac, the circle of animals

The word zodiac comes from the Greek zōidiakos kyklos, the “circle of little animals”. And indeed:

  • Seven signs are animals: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.
  • Four are human, in whole or in part: Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius and Sagittarius, half man, half horse.
  • Only one is an object: Libra, added later, which was once the claws of the Scorpion.

Each symbol thus links the sky to humanity’s great stories: the labors of Hercules, the loves of Zeus, the wars of the gods.

✦ ✦

Wearing your sign’s symbol

Wearing your sign’s glyph as a pendant or bracelet keeps its strength close: the drive of Aries, the stability of Taurus, the intuition of Pisces. Many see it as a talisman linking them to their star.

Each sign also has its own charm: discover the lucky charm of your sign and the most superstitious zodiac signs.

Key takeaways 📌

  • Each symbol hides a myth: the Golden Fleece, Castor and Pollux, the Nemean lion…
  • The zodiac, the “circle of animals”, has seven animals, four humans and one object.
  • Wearing your glyph keeps your sign’s strength close.
