Origins of lapis lazuli - Azure stone
The name Lapis-Lazuli is formed from the Latin terms "lapis" meaning "stone" and "lazuli" meaning "of azure". However, the term lazuli has a completely different meaning in Persian. Indeed, it is a derivative of lâdjevard which means "king's portion" which highlights the sacredness associated with this stone. The "azure stone" has been known and used for more than 7000 years, lapis lazuli is a metamorphic rock opaque and matte. This precious stone has veins of pyrite that were mistaken for gold powder for a long time.
In ancient times, it was also mistaken for sapphire. But what gives the stone its deep blue color and value is the amount of lazurite it contains.
