The golden ratio, written φ (phi), is worth about 1.618. You get it when two lengths a and b are in a ratio such that (a + b) / a = a / b: the whole is to the larger part what the larger part is to the smaller.
In geometry, it builds the golden rectangle: remove a square from it, and the remaining rectangle keeps the same proportions. Repeat the operation and you draw the golden spiral, which can grow forever without changing shape.
These shapes seem naturally pleasing to the human eye: that is the whole mystery of the golden ratio, both mathematical rigor and a sense of beauty.

Its roots lie in a sequence of numbers studied since antiquity. Around 300 BCE, the Indian mathematician Pingala described a pattern of syllables in Sanskrit poetry, the mātrāmeru. Some 1,500 years later, the Italian Fibonacci studied the same sequence in his Liber Abaci: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34… each number is the sum of the two before it.
The link is striking: the ratio between two consecutive numbers of the sequence gets closer and closer to 1.618. A simple sequence of numbers thus meets a proportion considered perfect, found in nature and in the arts. 🔢✨

The scales of a pine cone, the seeds of a sunflower or the petals of some flowers are arranged in spirals whose number follows the Fibonacci sequence.
