Tulip Colors Meaning: What Each Color Says

The tulip is a symbol of the Netherlands, but it also appears in many passages of One Thousand and One Nights, where it stands for love.

Whatever message you want to send to the one you love, there is a tulip to say it: here is the meaning of each color.

✦

Tulip colors and their meaning

Find the color that says what you feel:

The red tulip

Love in all its forms

Like the red rose, the red tulip expresses a powerful, sincere and strong love: give it to declare your feelings. It also symbolizes sensual love; it is said that slipping a red tulip under someone’s pillow means you want to spend the night with them.

The white tulip

A calm but intense love

Far more chaste than its red cousin, the white tulip expresses a sincere, idealized love. Give it to declare yourself, or to your partner for any occasion.

The pink tulip

Love in its first steps

The pink tulip symbolizes love being born: the softer the shade, the more innocent and fragile the feeling; the closer to red, the stronger. Pair it with white tulips to confess your feelings.

The yellow tulip

Love and its doubts

The yellow tulip is a symbol of worry: it is given to the one you love when you fear for the future of that love. It can also speak of an impossible love.

The variegated tulip

Crazy love

With its mixed colors, the variegated tulip carries several meanings: admiration and seduction. Whoever gives it loves madly and without restraint.

The black tulip

Eternal love

Rare and precious, the black tulip symbolizes intense, infinite love. It carries the color of mourning: it honors a love that goes on after a breakup or a loss, and says that love does not end with separation.

✦ ✦

The tulip, from the Ottoman Empire to the Netherlands

Before becoming Dutch, the tulip was Turkish. Coming from the steppes of Central Asia, it became the flower of the Ottoman Empire, so much so that it gave its name to an era, the “Tulip Era” (Lale Devri, 1718-1730). Its name is said to come from the Turkish tülbent, the turban, whose shape it recalls.

Brought to the Netherlands in the 16th century, it set off “tulip mania” in 1637: some bulbs sold for more than a house. It is still the symbol of Holland today, and in Persian poems as in One Thousand and One Nights it speaks of perfect love.

And if this flower does not suit you, discover the meaning of rose colors.

Key takeaways 📌
