Nanael is the fifty-third sacred name of the Shem HaMephorash — the 72 divine names drawn by the kabbalists from three verses of Exodus (XIV, 19-21). His Hebrew name נַנָאֵל translates literally as « God who humbles the proud ». Tradition also gives him a key, Jacob's Ladder: the one you climb and come back down, never in a single leap. The traditional call taken from the Psalms is: « I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. » (Psalm 119:75).
