Who is the angel Nanael?
Nanael is the angel of knowledge who walks through pride without bruising it. Tradition describes him as a masculine angel turned towards truth, close to those who teach, who write, who study — and to everyone who has had to admit, one day, that they were wrong.
The origin of the name Nanael
Nanael is the fifty-third sacred name of the Shem HaMephorash — the 72 divine names drawn by the kabbalists from three verses of Exodus (XIV, 19-21). His Hebrew name נַנָאֵל translates literally as « God who humbles the proud ». Tradition also gives him a key, Jacob's Ladder: the one you climb and come back down, never in a single leap. The traditional call taken from the Psalms is: « I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. » (Psalm 119:75).

Nanael belongs to the choir of the Principalities — the guardians of peoples and vocations, placed under the authority of the Sephira Netzach, the sphere of perseverance. The Principalities are not concerned with grand gestures: they hold the long stretches, the ones an apprenticeship or a life's work is made of.
