Mihael is the angel of bonds that hold. Kabbalistic tradition entrusts him with married love, faithfulness, fertility and the reconciliation of couples — everything in our emotional life that asks for duration rather than intensity. Where other angels light a fire, he tunes it.
Mihael is the forty-eighth sacred name of the Shem HaMephorash — the 72 divine names drawn by the kabbalists from the three verses of Exodus (XIV, 19-21). His Hebrew name מיהאל translates literally as "God the Helping Father". His key, "Concord of God", adds the nuance that sets him apart from the other angels of love: he does not create passion, he tunes it. The traditional invocation formula taken from the Psalms is: "The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen." (Psalm 98, v. 2).
Mihael belongs to the choir of the Virtues — the sixth choir, the angels who tune human desires to the needs of the soul, placed under the authority of the Sephirah Tiphereth, the balancing centre of the Tree of Life. He is its eighth and last name, the one that closes the cycle. His ruling archangel is Raphael, the great healer — which throws light on Mihael's whole mission: he heals love rather than inventing it.
His mission comes down to one word: discernment of the heart. Mihael does not judge your impulses, he helps you see what they are worth over time. Under his protection, a feeling is no longer measured by the intensity it triggers, but by the peace it leaves behind.
He also acts on what tradition calls generation: children, of course, but more broadly everything that needs to be carried to term — a project, a blended family, a reconciliation. Finally, he accompanies those going through bereavement or the end of a story, helping them love again without erasing what has been. It is the same movement carried by the angel Asaliah, his immediate neighbour in the choir of the Virtues, turned instead towards the contemplation of truth.
