Daniel's life is found in the book of Daniel, which he himself wrote, and in Ezekiel 14:14, 20 and 28:3. After the siege of Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, chose young men from noble families of Israel, who were pleasant looking and able to learn, to be trained in the science of the Babylonians. After three years of training, they would enter the service of the king (Daniel 1:1-6). Daniel, whose name means "God is my judge," and his three fellow Judeans were given new names: Daniel became Belshazzar, while Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were called Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
