The origins of Valentine's Day
Emperor Claudius II banned marriage, believing that married men made poor soldiers. But a Roman priest, Saint Valentine, secretly continued to marry young couples. He was eventually arrested, imprisoned, and executed on February 14, 270. According to legend, just before his execution, he gave a heart-shaped note to the jailer’s daughter, whom he had grown fond of, signed "From your Valentine."
