Plan your route
It may sound obvious, but it’s easy to get so excited that you just start driving. Although a certain amount of spontaneity is all part of the fun, sitting down with a map (or Google) before you go, means more time enjoying your time on the road, rather than worrying about where to go next.
Get the right wheels
Is your car fit for a long journey? If not, you might want to consider renting one. After all, it’s a fairly essential part of a road trip!
Do your research
Do you know all the rules of the road for the state/ country you’re going to? Are there any other rules you should take into account? Do all this before you leave, to avoid any nasty surprises!
Prepare for the worst
Spare tire, oil, water, jump leads, take it all. Sounds boring, but you never know when you might need it.
Watch your wallet
With tolls, gas and food stops, road trips can be more expensive than you might think. Set yourself a budget for each day, so you don’t run out after the first stop!
Food, food and more food
Whilst you’ll obviously stop at some delightful diners along the way, who knows how far it will be until the next one? Stock up on plenty of snacks to keep you going on the open road!
Keep it cool
A car can get pretty hot, especially in the summer, so a cooler box to keep all your food and drinks cold will be essential.
Make a killer playlist
Everyone knows a road trip is nothing without good music!
Whether you’re planning on camping out or sleeping in the car, plenty of blankets, pillows and warm clothes will help you battle the elements!
Make a campfire
Nothing says road trip like toasting marshmallows and singing round a campfire, right?
Take plenty of photos to make it a trip to remember. And it doesn’t have to be a fancy camera, sometimes badly-taken disposables are the best!
Write it down
Along with your photos, a scrapbook or journal is a fun way to document your memories from the trip as you go. Just remember your pen!
Keep the kids busy
Taking the kids along with you? There’s nothing worse than bored kids in the back of a car. Have plenty of games and toys at hand to keep them occupied!
The biggest 21st century problem (your cellphone running out) can be easily avoided by remembering a charger to plug into your car’s USB point. Now you can use Snapchat and Instagram to your heart’s conent!
Have an open mind
Despite all this planning, try not to be too fixed. Be ready to be spontaneous, meet new people and gain new experiences- it’s what road trips are about after all!
